Inspired by rural tableaus and
adept at depicting them in expressionist style, Sanjiivv Sankpal has been
dabbling in vibrantly coloured paintings ever since he can remember.
Having held several shows in
India and abroad; even as part of an exchange program in Canada, he has
garnered learnings that serve to enrich his skill set.

“I do not record the scene merely as my eyes observed it,”
he explains. “But imbue the image with a spiritual and psychological nature
that echoes in my personal simplified reaction”.
Deft brushstrokes thus give rise to emotionally evocative,
dramatic, imaginative, rhythmic, yet, simple canvases that convey far more than the appearance of the subject. His
is an impulsive, gestural application of paint and symbolic colours to express
emotions.
And his
choice of medium is acrylic on canvas – as the dynamic medium justifies his spontaneous
thoughts, translating them into form, with ease. He veers from opaque to
transparent application and vice versa; exploring the range of hues in the
colour palette.
The
resultant canvases depict evocative two-dimensional imagery, ingeniously eliminating
the depth that gives a three-dimensional result.
A
beautiful show with some exceptional canvases.
